Celebrating the First 100 Years 2017
Marks the Centennial Year of Fisher Ranch
Much has changed in the course of 100 years. Complex computer systems, Global Positioning System technology and scientific improvements in variety selection and development have all contributed to increasing efficiency and productivity at Fisher Ranch. One thing that hasn't changed is that our most valuable assets are the people who make it all happen.
1917 Fisher Ranch was founded by Wayne and Lucille Fisher in 1917 as a Brahma cattle ranch. Wayne was one of the first to introduce the Brahma breed to the United States and enjoyed touring livestock exposition shows across the Western states. At one point, Wayne was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the largest Brahma bull in the world, an enormous yet docile fellow affectionately known as Sam. 1920 Late 1920s – During the Great Depression, Wayne was instrumental in negotiating non interest loans from the federal government on behalf of the Palo Verde Irrigation District as part of the New Deal. The district then extended those same terms to local farmers in the valley. This helped to renew the local agricultural community of the Palo Verde Valley and established Wayne as an influential figure in the Palo Verde farming community. 1948 Wayne’s son, Dana returned to the US after working in Egypt for Trans World Airlines. Upon his return to Blythe, he expanded the use of scientific research in agriculture. He went on to serve as an agriculture advisor to the University of California, Riverside. 1960's Dana established the Progressive Farmers Organization in Blythe to help promote and disseminate agriculture research in the Palo Verde Valley. 1972 Third generation Bart returned to the family business after graduating from University of California, Davis. Bart Fisher and family 1977 As part of the farm’s expansion into fresh produce, the Hi-Value melon packing shed and produce cold room were constructed. In time, the farm’s cooling needs would expand and additional sheds and coolers were built or acquired. 1982 Bart and Dana establish their own 2-way radio business. Today, Fisher Wireless Services has grown into the largest 2-way radio service provider in the United States. 1999 Bart installed a solar farm and a series of natural gas fired generators to power the Fisher Ranch facilities. This allows the ranch to operate independently of the public power grid. Over time, Bart expanded on the technology to complete a combination cooling, heat and power (CCHP) tri-generation system. 2011 Fourth Generation Andrew joined the family business after graduating from the University of Redlands. We’ve spent a century perfecting everything we grow, seeking out the best seed varieties for successful, marketable crops. Melons are a unique specialty to Fisher Ranch. We are on the forefront of new varieties as they are introduced to the market and we are very selective in what we choose to grow. To provide the best eating experience, we produce melons all throughout California during the domestic harvest season. Golden Dewlicious® Fisher Ranch Corp. They are simply the most delicious melon available. The golden dewlicious are my favorite......but I love them all.....they're better than what I have purchased at my local Farmer's market. Thanks for giving me and my family such a wonderful summer treat.” —Eia Lehman
Perfect Pairings
and Serving Suggestions
Fresh melons go especially well with savory foods.
• Wrapped melon with prosciutto or smoked turkey
• Sliced melon served with cheese such a gorgonzola or fontina
• Melon with yogurt and pistachios
• Chunks of melon sprinkled with feta cheese and basil
Any grilled fish becomes a sensation with this Latin-inspired salsa featuring diced Orange and Golden Dewlicious®, jalapeño, red onion and cilantro. Firm Golden Hami melon complements Asian soba noodles and edamame drizzled with ginger sesame dressing. “When I was young we purchased cantaloupe grown in Florida. They were mouth-watering sweet and delicious, and it was rare to get one that had no flavor. Now, most of those Florida farms grow a larger variety that we do not care for because they simply are not as flavorful or good tasting as the old variety. I recently saw some of your cantaloupes in a local Wal-Mart store, and purchased some. I could actually smell them in the store, although they appeared to be only half to 3/4 ripe. We cut the first one the next day, and they have been so great that they reminded me of those from my childhood.” —Pat Smith
